Herbal supplements or remedies are made using either dried or fresh plants or plant extracts. Herbal remedies have been used to treat illnesses since the beginning of time. In the Stirling Health Food Store we mainly focus on western herbal medicines. But we can also order ayurvedic herbal remedies in. In contrast to traditional medicines which extract one component from a plant, herbal medicines use the whole plant. Aspirin for example is made from an extract from the bark of a white willow. But St. John's Wort tablets often contain the whole plant.
It is generally safe to use herbal supplements however, if you are on any prescribed medication you need to tell us and inform your doctor you want to try herbal remedies. You cannot use herbal remedies if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You also need to contact your doctor if you are suffering from a heart condition, epilepsy, Type 1 diabetes, just had or about to have an operation. Don't hesitate to ask any of us about the safety of taking herbal remedies, we do have a list with drug interactions and side effects, but in some cases it's sometimes better to inform your GP first.
